As a baker of more modern wedding cakes, I tend to leave cake toppers off favoring a clean look. That’s because I remember the old ceramic brides and grooms: Mismatched eyes, someone else’s hair color, and strange lipstick…right?! Remember that? They seemed to be painted by someone who didn’t really care, and weren’t very unique. Conveyor-belt production at its worst.
But more and more I find artisans just like me reaching for something more current with cakes — and toppers. Enter Etsy.com. Etsy has opened my eyes to these great hand-crafted custom toppers made from unexpected materials: Paper, steel, buttons, tulle and feathers, and I want to use them all. Take a look.
These paper toppers by Gwen at Concarta are custom made to look like you, your best friend, and if you like, your dog!
Gwen also makes these intricate paper flowers in all colors and sizes. I can’t wait to use these for some lucky cake!
Next are metal toppers from another Etsy fave, SheaChicDesigns. Their use of original materials work really well with everything from very architectural cakes to more playful designs:
Imagine these playful, colorful and unexpected flowers on your cake with a matching bouquet simply laying on the top tier. These are from Jillians shop on Etsy, and have all the charm of an afternoon spent at one of Gatsby’s parties (or shopping at Anthro :

Have a great day,
