As a baker of more modern wedding cakes, I tend to leave cake toppers off favoring a clean look. That’s because I remember the old ceramic brides and grooms: Mismatched eyes, someone else’s hair color, and strange lipstick…right?! Remember that? They seemed to be painted by someone who didn’t really care, and weren’t very unique. Conveyor-belt production at its worst.
But more and more I find artisans just like me reaching for something more current with cakes — and toppers. Enter Etsy.com. Etsy has opened my eyes to these great hand-crafted custom toppers made from unexpected materials: Paper, steel, buttons, tulle and feathers, and I want to use them all. Take a look.
